Ricky Fitzpatrick: Instrumental Music

Whirlwind (Whilrygig)

Copyright 2010 Ricky Fitzpatrick Music

A track on Soulfood Music "Guitar Instrumentals Vol. 3" CD. Release date June 8, 2010.

I’m playing a Francisan brand acoustic, fingerpicked and simply mic’d through a Shure 58 and a 57, simultaneously. The 58, 3 inches from the 15th fret, straight on and the 57 hanging about 12” over my right shoulder (suspended from the ceiling on a wire clothes hanger!).

Richard Hardy is wowing us with his flute and then DJ Free is applying the pads, as well as the final mix and mastering it all.

Originally, the title "Whirlygig" came about because the music brought about visions of like, a field full of those cheap little pinwheel things you get at the dollar store...tons of those and dozens of different, unique and colorful handmade gigs. You know, the bird bobbing or the farmer chopping wood, a bird's wings flapping or a duck running?

All of them whirlying and squeaking and creaking, giving off this mysterious kind of vibe as the wind turns them all in unison.

Upon release on the Soulfood CD, it was renamed "Whirlwind", to give it a little more of a universal appeal.

When I asked Gordon Free (aka DJ Free) where the flute sounds on the new mix came from…if it was a synth or a live musician. This is what he sent…

"Flutes live brotha!  By woodwinds extraordinare Richard Hardy who’s played with Carole King (14 years), Dave Mattthews & played on IMAX Everst, Dolphins & Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers."

Pretty cool. It's a real thrill and honor to have his talent be such an integral part of this recording. God has really blessed me and my career with some amazing people and experiences!

I also discovered that Richard has played with or for folks like Lyle Lovett, John Prine, Elvin Bishop, Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Harrison, The Moody Blues, Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), Sting and Crosby Stills & Nash.

And me. :)
