Hurricane Shoals, is a park near our home. We live in a small rural area and HS is a place where the Oconee River runs wide and fast over a vast expanse of exposed granite rocks. Beautiful and slippery! But a wonderful place.

This song hopefully, brings a visual image of the shoals to mind as you listen. In my mind, I imagine a stick or something floating down the water, around the last bend before the shoals start thinning out and getting fast, bobbing around and building. Then churning through the choppy waters, tumbling and sinking and finally coming back to a calm cruise as the water mellows back out.

The recording (although this is a demo) is a pretty simple setup…three acoustic guitars in four tracks, all tuned a half step below a dropped D. Recorded on my Fostex HD-8 into one Shure SM-58. A little room reverb, a doubling of the main track and some creative panning, and that's it.

I mixed and Mastered this myself with just a touch of EQ (2db boost @ 20 and 200hz, 3db @ 6.3K and 5 @ 20k). A little additional bump in gain. A very light limiter set at a -2 threshold. No compression. Slight noise reduction.

FYI, in case you're wondering, this is NOT the song to be used for the Down By the Water's Edge project.

I'm also hoping to be able to record the final version of this, on-site at the park, using one of the amazing restored buildings (chapel or one of the cabins) in the park's Heritage Village.
